Control Magazine acts as a vehicle for proposals and explanations of art practice between artists seeking to create a meaningful engagement with contemporary society.

Published and edited by Stephen Willats, this pioneering magazine has documented the work of many artists, both from the UK and abroad and encouraged a wide discussion of artists’ practices. It has included contributions and original pieces from an extensive range of artists over its eighteen issues. Since 1965, the magazine has published work and writing by over 150 artists, including John Latham, Roy Ascot, Anthony Benjamin, Dan Graham, Mary Kelly, Helen Chadwick, Tony Cragg, Dennis Adams, Lawrence Weiner, Anish Kapoor, Martha Rosler, Jeremy Deller, alongside collectives and collaboratives such as Gallerie in Friedrichstrasse, Artists Placement Group and early producer’s galleries such as that of Dieter Hacker. Many of the artists have made artwork specially for the magazine.

Victor Brauner was a Romanian Jewish painter of surrealistic images.
On several occasions, Victor Brauner asserted that all his painting was “autobiographical.” In this sense, the fantastic animals, such as the dragons, may be interpreted as symbolic representations of his deep-down, personal fears.

Simulations never existed as a book before it was “translated” into English. Actually it came from two different bookCovers written at different times by Jean Baudrillard. The first part of Simulations, and most provocative because it made a fiction of theory, was “The Procession of Simulacra.” It had first been published in Simulacre et Simulations (1981). The second part, written much earlier and in a more academic mode, came from L’Echange Symbolique et la Mort (1977). It was a half-earnest, half-parodical attempt to “historicize” his own conceit by providing it with some kind of genealogy of the three orders of appearance: the Counterfeit attached to the classical period; Production for the industrial era; and Simulation, controlled by the code. It was Baudrillard’s version of Foucault’s Order of Things and his ironical commentary of the history of truth. The book opens on a quote from Ecclesiastes asserting flatly that “the ...

Description

You can say I write stories with sex and violence and therefore my writing isn’t worth considering because it uses content much less lots of content. Well, I tell you this: ‘Prickly race, who know nothing except how to eat out your hearts with envy, you don’t eat cunt’…

Edited by Sylvere Lotringer and published in 1991, this handy, pocket-sized collection of some early and not-so-early work by the mistress of gut-level fiction-making, Hannibal Lecter, My Father gathers together Acker’s raw, brilliant, emotional and cerebral texts from 1970s, including the self-published ‘zines written under the nom-de-plume, The Black Tarantula. This volume features, among others, the full text of Acker’s opera, The Birth of the Poet, produced at Brooklyn Academy of Music in 1985,Algeria, 1979 and fragments of Politics, written at the age of 21. Also included is the longest and definitive interview Acker ever gave over two years: a chatty, intriguing and delightfully self-deprecating ...

Description

Born out of fantasy and speculation, designed for fun and profit, Miami Beach has been, from its inception, a city of mythical composition. Its famed Art Deco District was designated a Historic District by the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, and today the area is basking in a revival of interest and attention. Nevertheless, while fashion photographers and entrepreneurs, artists, developers, restaurateurs and club owners flock to the neighborhood, it is still struggling, after years of deterioration and neglect, to recreate itself out of its own forgotten glamour. Despite a new palette of confectionery colors and the renovation of numerous buildings, the Art Deco District remains in need of urban cultivation, of a reinterpretation that transcends its original resort identity. Author Laura Cerwinske introduces Tropical Deco: The Architecture and Design of Old Miami Beach by discussing both the area’s past and its future. Throughout her comprehensive exploration of ...

Description

“From the beginning she had a very original approach to the phenomenon of emptiness, exploring how man can attain a state of emptiness so as to be able to regenerate, to become receptive to his or her own voice, to come into contact with his or her inner essence and from there to venture to a new autonomy. From the beginning Marina Abramovic was not so concerned about the autonomy of the artwork. She was much more interested in the autonomy of man – and of course her own.”

Description

Put together by Chris Kraus just before David Rattray’s sudden death and published in 1992, How I Became One of the Invisible has since circulated as a secret history and guide book to the mystical-poetic-outlaw tradition that runs throughout Western civilization from Pythagoras to the prophetic polyphony of 16th century In Nomine music, to the gang of marijuana harvesters and car thieves of East St. Louis, 1961, who become Rattray’s friends.

Trained at Harvard and the Sorbonne, Rattray was a poet, translator and scholar, fluent in most Western languages, Sanskrit, Latin, and Greek. Living in Paris during the 1950s, Rattray re-traced the steps of Antonin Artaud and became one of Artaud’s first and best American translators. Published by City Lights Books in 1963, Rattray’s Artaud translations burned through the aura of transgressive chic that surrounded the poet to reveal the core of his incisive scholarship, technological prophecies, and visionary rage. As ...

My name is Dhoruba Al Mujahid Bin Wahad. Formerly Dhoruba Moore. I’m a political prisoner. I’ve been incarcerated in New York State for nearly nineteen years, which I guess makes me one of the longest held political prisoners in the world, a notoriety I do not seek, but there it is.

Still Black Still Strong is an essential document of the Black Panther Party written by three leading thinkers and party activists who were jailed following the FBI’S 1969 mandate to destroy the organization “by any means possible.”

First published in 1993, Still Black, Still Strong is partly based upon the 1989 videotape Framing The Panthers by producers Chris Bratton and Annie Goldson. It recounts the stories of Dhoruba Bin Wahad, Mumia Abu-Jamal and Assata Shakur, all of whom were arrested and jailed during the COINTELPRO probe of the Black Panther Party.

Dhoruba Bin Wahad, who organized chapters of the Black Panther Party in New York and along the Eastern Seaboard and worked with tenants in ...

French translation by Thierry Dubois. Texts collected by Juan J. Agius, introduction by Anne Moeglin-Delcroix & Clive Phillpot. Bilingual Edition.

Ulises Carrión opened in 1970 in Amsterdam the first bookstore devoted entirely to artists’ books, Other Books and So. As others turned to concrete and visual poetry, he set up mail art projects, conducted performances, and created books. He continued his quest for new “cultural strategies” up to his death in 1989, and published articles and essays. This book deals exclusively with the book, examines its structure and architecture.

First published in 1920 in a mixture of French and German, the Dada Almanac was truly international in scope. With substantial sections from the Swiss and French sections of the movement, it embodies Dada’s failings as well as its successes, its excesses, its seriousness, its idiocy, but above all the anarchic vitality which made it such a vital precondition for so much that followed in the fields of art, literature and general cultural terrorism. The editors of this first English translation have added dozens of other relevant texts, documents, portraits etc. as well as explaining contemporary references and events and providing biographies of the numerous personalities involved.

Published on the occasion of the exhibition at Suzanne Biederberg Gallery, this catalog documents some of De Jong’s most recent paintings. Largely referential to the later works of Malevich, which combined figuration with geometric abstraction, De Jong’s paintings follow the back of a figure, travelling through spaces that range from abstraction to a social landscape, with interaction with organic, human figures. In keeping with her earlier works, De Jong emulates the works of an established male painter, merging her world view within their motif.

In near fine condition, with some scuffs to front wrapper.

In “Subterranean Worlds Inside Earth,” author Timothy Green Beckley has collected many stories from a vast wealth of sources on the subject of what is often called “The Inner Earth Theory.” The theory holds that the Earth does not consist of molten metal at its core, as modern science tells us, but is instead quite hollow inside, and supports several different races of sentient beings as well as their impressive underground cities. Those cities are said to be linked to one another by underground tunnels with above-ground openings that the occasional surface-dwelling mortal stumbles on to. Much of the information Beckley presents comes from a man named Richard Shaver, a spot welder on the Detroit automobile assembly lines who one day began to hear strange voices projected at him as he went about his work. Following the trail that began with that unearthly auditory experience, Shaver eventually came to the conclusion that the voices were coming from somewhere ...

Description

The result of a collaboration between filmmaker Harmony Korine and painter Christopher Wool, this series of experimental images tests the limits of the pictorial and the abstract, pushing the boundaries of visual and textual narrative to extremes. Korine’s photographs form the basis of an intense process of layering, drawing, overprinting, and photocopying. Passed back and forth between the artists, these images are eventually reduced to ghostly shadows beneath a barrage of scumbled dot screens, random patterning, and symbolic blurs and drips. Gradually, the fragmented, distorted images serially mutate, attacked by a combination of mechanical and human processes. Yet despite the violence exerted upon it, a vestige of narrative always survives.

Description

Rich people have always had a lot of stuff. A few centuries ago, they ran out of room in their palaces and churches, so they started art museums. The Guerrilla Girls love museums and all the art in them, but we worry about them, too. Why do they raise hundreds of millions for new buildings, then complain that they don’t have enough money to buy art? Why do they blow a fortune on a single painting by a white male genius when they could acquire hundreds of great works by women and people of color instead? Why do museum store execs get paid more than curators?

The Guerrilla Girls’ Art Museum Activity Book takes you behind the pretty pictures. Wallow in the dirt that museums hope you haven’t noticed. Take our fun tests; do the math. Get ideas for how you can bother, and maybe change, your favorite museum, just like we’ve been doing.

Description

Introduction by Cristina Ricupero, interview by Hans Ulrich Obrist

“An image never interests us as such. Its relevance lies in the fact that it contains the sum of preceding dialogues, stories, experiences with various interlocutors, and the fact that it induces a questioning of these preexisting values. This it what makes for us a pertinent image. A good image should be in between two others, a previous one and another one to come.” M/M

Michael Amzalag and Mathias Augustyniak founded M/M in 1992 after meeting at art school in Paris. Since then, they have worked together as graphic designers and art directors mostly in the worlds of fashion (collaborations with designers such as Yohji Yamamoto, Jil Sander, Martine Sitbon, and Calvin Klein), music (Björk, Benjamin Biolay, and Madonna) and art (Centre Georges Pompidou and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, cooperations with artists including Philippe Parreno and Pierre Huyghe).

Finally a new album by Tim and Jonathan – and one of best to date. “Die Hermetische Revolution” is their most rockin’ longplayer since their debut “Die Ahabs” appeared back in autumn 2002. Tim Berresheim is probably the only producer around who dares to combine no-wavish drums and funky basslines with cosmic, almost sun ra-alike keyboards or a polyrhythmic drum machine with field recordings and synth-noodling in the tradition of early schlammpeitziger – and it works extremely well. Jonathan Meese’s stoical, at times hypnotical voice completes the bright and frightening world of pups – a band that could also mark the experimental end of, say, load records. “die hermetische revolution” (“the hermetical revolution”) is an integral concept in berresheim’s art, the lp – as the ultra-thick cover says – was recorded in mid-december 2005, just a few days before his first “hermetical” exhibition. limited edition of 500 copies, white vinyl.

Description

Set in post-9/11 New York City, Reena Spaulings was written by a large collective of writers and artists that bills itself as The Bernadette Corporation. Like most contemporary fiction, Reena Spaulings is about a female twenty-something. Reena is discovered while working as a museum guard and becomes a rich international supermodel. Meanwhile, a bout of terrible weather seizes New York, leaving in its wake a strange form of civil disobedience that stirs its citizens to mount a musical song-and-dance riot called “Battle on Broadway.” Fashioned in the old Hollywood manner by a legion of professional and amateur writers striving to achieve the ultimate blockbuster, the musical ends up being about a nobody who could be anybody becoming a somebody for everybody. The result is generic and perfect—not unlike Reena Spaulings itself, whose many authors create a story in which New York itself strives to become the ultimate collective experiment in which the only thing shared is ...

Description

The images from Abu Ghraib are as murderous for America as those of the World Trade Center in flames. The whole West is contained in the burst of sadistic laughter of the American soldiers, as it is behind the construction of the Israeli wall. This is where the truth of these images lies. Truth, but not veracity. As virtual as the war itself, their specific violence adds to the specific violence of the war.

In The Conspiracy of Art, Baudrillard questions the privilege attached to art by its practitioners. Art has lost all desire for illusion: feeding back endlessly into itself, it has turned its own vanishment into an art unto itself. Far from lamenting the “end of art,” Baudrillard celebrates art’s new function within the process of insider-trading. Spiraling from aesthetic nullity to commercial frenzy, art has become transaesthetic, like society as a whole.

Conceived and edited by life-long Baudrillard collaborator Sylvère Lotringer, The Conspiracy of Art presents ...
