THOUGHTS FOR FOOD

12 Feb. 2013

OMMU is happy to announce Alex Turgeon’s Thoughts for Food solo show in Athens.

Taking up a glass
A clash of forks
Romance reflected
Off a dinner plate
To a symphony of pointed sticks

Slipping into slow bake
Hunched over a stove
Slave to the rhythm
Of a perfect meringue

Hells Kitchen
Kneaded out of the knots
Of a special loaf
For watching the world turn

To not give a fig
For good measure
To sweeten parched lips
Of salivating salvation

The still life has become situated somewhere between a mode of expression and an expression of fashion. Thoughts for Food is a look into questioning the therapeutic and benign potential of the domesticated lifestyle franchise. By taking on stylistic qualities of surrealism and product photography, Thoughts for Food considers the space between advertising and abstraction to illustrate the fleeting romanticism of desire.

ROOKIE

30 Nov. 2012

ROOKIE comes together in 3 parts: art book exhibition, publishing trade show and discussion series. “Rookie” is a term borrowed from the world of professional sports which describes someone who’s at the very threshold of their professional career, someone who doesn’t have much experience, someone who is usually fated to spend most matches on the reserve bench. A “Rookie” isn’t an amateur, but a player who hasn’t yet achieved his full potential. A player who knows his worth and that he must prove himself on the field. In the framework of the ROOKIE FESTIVAL, the word takes on a new meaning in the context of books, describing both the youngest generation of independent publishers in Poland and the newbie nature of the event itself, with this edition being the very first of its kind in Poland. Those participating in “Rookie” – artists, curators, publishers, graphic designers – are professionals in their fields and their combined efforts have brought about an entirely new setting for the increasingly popular realm of the art book.

POSTCARDS AND RARE MULTIPLES

10 Oct. 2012

OMMU is pleased to present “Postcards and Rare Multiples”, an exhibition of just what the words say, postcards and rare multiples, designed and produced for and by Eric Wrenn OFFICE. This is a practice that signals an impressive implementation of graphic design as an exercise in providing space for the wild circulation of images and information to slow down and find new configurations; configurations that let the quality of its content—be it clever, elegant or even stupid—communicate like the clouds of smoke from Magritte’s pipe. A personal business card as an American flag is a good example, where the stars and stripes are put to use as an image that expresses one’s personal contact without the need of an email. An artist book for Robin Cameron that is orchestrated as a three-act play is another, adding curtains and a spotlight to amplify the theatricality of Cameron’s practice that self-consciously performs its very artistic subjectivity. Even the layouts produced for SUP Magazine are designed in such a manner that activates its pages with a restless compositional experimentation, coupling text and image to the cadence of a conversation, and ultimately managing one of the most successful defibrillations of print music journalism in this weird new age of blogs, pdfs and microblogs. With works produced specifically for OMMU, “Postcards and Rare Multiples” is a chance to see this noteworthy practice respond and reconfigue itself specifically for the exhibition format. Noteworthy among these is the Eric Wrenn OFFICE design portfolio—photographed by frequent collaborator Milan Zrnic and seen online at ericwrennoffice.com—output in the format of a tourist shop postcard rack. Also included is perhaps the most concise expression of Eric Wrenn OFFICE’s design approach. Perhaps it is a koan-style philosophy like this: the designer must reach the point where the design is also not the design, that is to say, the designer himself. Such words are just to clarify—by way of new age nonsense—the fact that, while this exhibition is on view, OMMU will function as a branch of Eric Wrenn OFFICE.

VANCOUVER ART/BOOK FAIR

05 Oct. 2012

OMMU at the Vancouver Art/Book Fair
October 6th–7th, 2012
Reception: Friday, October 5th, 8pm

Project Space and presenting partner Fillip host the first annual Vancouver Art/Book Fair. Drawing from publishers local and international, VA/BF showcases emerging practices and contemporary dialogues in publication through a series of talks, book launches, readings and more, as well as more than seventy publishers of books, magazines, zines and printed ephemera.
VA/BF arose in response to the lack of international art book fairs in Canada and on the West Coast, as well as in acknowledgment of the rich history and current energy in artist publishing in Vancouver and Canada.

VA/BF is an extension of Project Space’s mission to act as a platform for engagement with and critical exploration of publication. Situated at an intersection of disciplines—namely the visual arts, literary arts and/or critical design—publication presents a unique space of inquiry that is often complemented by interdisciplinary practice, collaboration or co-production. With this in mind, the fair will explore publication in a way that is inclusive of dialogues in the visual and literary arts, as well as graphic design.
